There are lots of fantastic places in the UK to learn English. Most British cities have at least one language school where students can study English, and the majority of these offer a range of courses at a variety of levels.
Generally speaking, the most affordable type of course is a ‘General English’ course, which usually involves around 20 hours of tuition. Normally, students will have either morning or afternoon sessions every day, and will have the other half of the day free to enjoy activities, excursions or just some free time to explore by themselves. The price of a General English course varies from school to school, but normally costs somewhere between £140 and £220 per week.
When it comes to booking an English course though, students should look further than just the price of the course. They need also to consider the cost of accommodation, the cost of any travel to and from the school, and also the general cost of living in their prospective location. For example, although London is an exciting and interesting place to study, with many affordable courses on offer, the cost of living there can be substantially higher than in other cities in the UK. It is also likely, when you study in London, t hat you will have to use public transport to get to and from school, which can also increase the overall cost.
Often, the cities that offer more value for money in terms of living costs are located in the north of England, in Scotland and in Northern Ireland. Of all the English schools in the UK, some of those that offer the best value in terms of course fees and accommodation (as well as cost of living) are located in Glasgow, Belfast, Liverpool, Leeds and Manchester. Whilst Belfast and Glasgow are located in Northern Ireland and Scotland respectively, Liverpool and Manchester are located in the North West of England, and Leeds in the county of West Yorkshire.
Many of these cities were formerly known for their industry, but all are now also recognised as renowned centres for learning, and for having cultural and entertainment scenes that are second-to-none. They all cater very well for students, and will give anyone who studies English a fascinating insight into regional identities within the UK. All of these cities also enjoy great transport links, each with their own international airport and mainline train stations.
